When drivers speed and drive recklessly, they put the lives of others in danger. Their careless actions can lead to car accidents that have a tragic outcome. In a recent case in central Pennsylvania, a driver’s recklessness was so egregious that it has led to a lengthy list of criminal charges, including third-degree murder and homicide by vehicle.
Two Lives Lost Because Of One Woman’s Carelessness
According to an article from York Daily Record, a woman collided with a school bus and several other vehicles, ultimately causing the death of two teenagers. The woman was driving more than 50 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour at the time of the car wreck.
In the event that a negligent driver causes the injury or death of another party, the victim or victim’s family often files a personal injury or wrongful death claim. This allows the victim to seek compensation for costs such as medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, funeral expenses and more. However, these are civil lawsuits and do not result in criminal penalties for the driver who caused the automobile accident. While the driver may face separate criminal charges, murder and homicide charges are not common.
In this case, however, the prosecution has stated that the charges are justified due to the accused’s “gross disregard of the extreme risk she posed” by driving so fast and recklessly. While an arrest warrant has been filed, the accused is currently recovering from injuries she sustained in the car crash and will be arraigned upon release from the hospital.
